Fjarðabyggð Port Authority
The Port Authority ranks among Iceland's leading harbour operators. It provides five well-equipped harbours, located at the population centres of Neskaupstaður, Eskifjörður, Fáskrúðsfjörður, Stöðvarfjörður and Reyðarfjörður. Clear approaches, first-rate port facilities, favourable locations and a wide range of services make these harbours especially attractive for seafarers.
With its long history of outfitting and servicing vessels, Fjarðabyggð municipality has extensive experience in assisting boats and ships. Today, the area's major fishing enterprises operate top-performance vessels which require excellent harbour facilities. Due to considerable vessel traffic over the years, various local service providers have specialised in a wide variety of marine services, enabling each to offer work of high calibre.
All services normally needed by seafarers are available. The landing facilities are outstanding, and in addition there are high-capacity ice plants, refrigeration and freezing plants, and all necessary maintenance and fishing gear services. The tugboat Vöttur, built in 2007 and operated by the Port Authority, not only has a pulling power of 27.8 tonnes, but also carries an extremely powerful fire pump which can deliver around 300 m3 per hour and is intended for putting out fires in vessels or elsewhere in the harbours.
Food, clothing and other supplies that crews require are right on hand in Fjarðabyggð. Good health care services are available, as well as banking and recreation options.
Since cargo vessels go directly from Fjarðabyggð to Europe and since local sailing distances to the continent rank among Iceland's shortest, Fjarðabyggð is a logical choice for landing any product destined for export. Few ports in Iceland are located as close to traditional fishing grounds for capelin, herring and blue whiting, while large-scale onshore freezing plants and other plants for processing fish, shrimp, fish meal and oil render it unnecessary for fishing vessels to transport their catches to far-off ports.
